Tavira is the eastern Algarve's most graceful town, built on both banks of the Gilão river, with island beaches a short ferry ride away.
Why stay in Tavira
Tavira feels lived-in rather than built for tourists. There are churches and convents to wander through, a covered market and riverside cafés. The beaches are on the barrier islands, which means calm, warm water and miles of sand.
The Ria Formosa lagoon is on the doorstep for birdwatching, cycling and the best clams and oysters in the region.
Good to know
The ferry to Ilha de Tavira runs from Easter to October. Out of season, Praia do Barril is reachable on foot or by the little beach train.
