Faro is more than an airport: its walled Cidade Velha, cobbled squares and lagoon boat trips make it a rewarding place to start or end a trip.
Why stay in Faro
Inside the old walls you'll find the cathedral, with views over the Ria Formosa from its tower, small museums and quiet squares lined with orange trees. Outside them, the marina and downtown streets are full of tascas and pastry shops.
Boats leave from the old town pier for the islands of Deserta and Culatra, where the beaches are empty even in August.
