Seven coves between Lagos and Sagres where you can still find space on the sand, even in summer.
Everyone has heard of Dona Ana and Camilo. Here are seven coves where you can still lay out a towel in August without stepping over anyone. Most of them need a short walk, and that's the point.
1. Praia do Barranco
A sandy valley beach reached by a dirt track west of Salema. No facilities and no phone signal. Bring water and shade.
2. Praia da Boca do Rio
A wide bay with a river mouth and Roman ruins on the cliff. It's popular with walkers on the coastal path, and quiet by late afternoon.
3. Praia das Furnas
Small, sheltered and only reachable at lower tides. Check the tide table before you set off.
4–7. Cabanas Velhas, Ingrina, Zavial and Figueira
Ingrina and Zavial are lovely for snorkelling on calm days. Figueira is a 20-minute walk from the village and usually almost empty.
Ask our local team when you arrive. We'll tell you which way the wind is blowing, so you know which coast to head for.
