Storks on the bell towers, a boat to an empty island and the best custard tart near the cathedral.
Most visitors only see Faro through a taxi window. Give it a weekend and it becomes one of the most relaxing towns on the coast.
Saturday
Start at the Arco da Vila and wander the Cidade Velha before it warms up. Climb the cathedral tower for the lagoon views, then have lunch at a tasca on Rua do Município.
In the afternoon, take the boat from the old-town pier to Ilha Deserta. You'll have hours of beach and be back by sunset.
Sunday
Stop at the municipal market for fruit and cheese, then walk along the Ria Formosa as the storks circle the bell towers.
