Lively west or graceful east? How the two towns compare for beaches, food, families and getting around.
Lagos and Tavira are the two towns guests ask us about most. Both are beautiful, walkable and full of good food, but they feel very different.
Beaches
Lagos has dramatic cliff coves and grottoes. Tavira has long, flat island beaches with gentle, warmer water. If you have toddlers, Tavira wins.
Atmosphere
Lagos is younger and busier, with bars, surf shops and boat trips. Tavira is calmer and more local, with evenings spent by the river.
Getting around
Tavira is 30 minutes from Faro airport and Lagos about an hour. Both have train stations, but a car makes day trips much easier.
Still torn? Split the week: three nights in each, with a lunch stop in Carvoeiro on the way.
